The next year he became editor of the Southwestern Christian Advocate. While attending to these public activities, Revels actively continued his religious work. It was while attending a church conference in Aberdeen, Mississippi that Hiram Rhoades Revels died on January 16, 1901.

He was a member of the Republican Party. A freeman his entire life, Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American to serve in the U.S. Congress. With his moderate political orientation and oratorical skills honed from years as a preacher, Revels filled a vacant seat in the United States Senate in 1870. Hiram Revels was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on September 27, 1827.

Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American to serve in the United States Senate. Hiram Rhodes Revels attended Knox College's preparatory academy in 1856-57. It was his last year of formal education and a time of great abolitionist fervor at the College. Prior to coming to Knox, Revels had been imprisoned in Missouri for preaching to blacks.
